When you call our office, most likely you need an appointment for a consultation, routine treatment or emergency treatment.  Sometimes, depending on the advice of your dentist or your symptom history, the decision is obvious.  Usually, you will be speaking with Maryanne or Amy, who have combined experiences in endodontics of about 40 years and will assist in determining exactly what you require and the best way we can help you. 

Your dentist might refer you to Dr. Marshall for a consultation for a variety of reasons.  It might be for an opinion or to determine the source of discomfort, pain, swelling or other symptoms you might be experiencing from your teeth, mouth or surrounding tissues.  Regardless of the reason, your dentist knows Dr. Marshall is very conservative and will suggest you have endodontic intervention only if he feels there are no other reasonable options.  At this type of visit, Dr. Marshall will listen to your symptom history, ask questions regarding your problem, take the digital images that are necessary, examine the area in question and do any testing that might be required.  After he has come to an opinion, he will discuss your situation in great detail, present all your options and go over your digital images with you.  His mission is to thoroughly educate you so you can make the choice you feel is best for you.  If you are having pain and coming for an evaluation to try and determine the problem, it is advised not to take any pain medication (even Advil or Tylenol) before the appointment, as it might mask your symptoms and cause the diagnosis to be more difficult or impossible. 

Sometimes it is obvious a consultation is not needed and you might decide to schedule a longer appointment, at which time the actual root canal treatment can be performed.  If this is the choice you make, be assured Dr. Marshall will still spend the time necessary to examine your tooth, discuss your options, explain the root canal process and will proceed only when you are ready.  We believe in scheduling appointments which are long enough to allow for plenty of time to treat you comfortably and often still have an opportunity to complete your treatment, too.  Sometimes, however, additional appointments are required to achieve the best result possible. 

If you have pain or an emergency situation, you probably need an emergency appointment.  At this type of visit, we will examine your tooth, diagnose the problem, discuss your options and if endodontic therapy is indicated and requested, proceed with treatment.  The goal of emergency treatment is to alleviate your symptoms, which is usually pain and sometimes swelling.  Every attempt will be made to see you as soon as possible.  Sometimes that will require you to be very flexible in your availability so we have a greater chance of finding a time for you.  Since we are fitting you in to our schedule with short notice, we might not have enough time to complete the entire treatment.  However, once your emergency situation has been solved and your tooth is comfortable, it is simple to have you back for a second visit to complete your treatment.  

Important: please do not take any pain medication (not even Advil or Tylenol) before you come for an emergency appointment, so we will have a better chance of diagnosing your problem.    

If you have not been to our office before or if it has been some years since your last visit, you will have paperwork to fill out.  Please arrive 15 minutes earlier than your scheduled time for this, so your actual time with Dr. Marshall can be maximized.  We work very diligently to provide you with a positive experience and realize your time is as valuable our time and strive to be punctual.  We ask you to do the same.  If an emergency situation causes us to be running late, we will make every effort to contact you. Please be certain to give us your cell phone number so we can reach you in this circumstance. 

An adult or guardian must accompany any patient under the age of 18 to an appointment.

If you have a condition or prosthetic device for which a physician has previously advised you should take an antibiotic prior to any dental treatment, please remember to do so.  If you are not sure, please check with your physician, orthopedist, cardiologist or ask us.  Please don’t forget, as we will not be able to proceed.
